What is padel?

Padel is a racket sport played by four people on a small court enclosed by glass and mesh walls, with a short, stringless racket. The two things that set it apart from tennis: the ball stays in play off the walls, and the court is roughly a third the size of a tennis court.

How is padel played?

The serve is underarm and struck after one bounce. Scoring is the same as tennis: 15, 30, 40, game. A ball that bounces and then comes off the wall is still live; a ball that hits the wall first is not.

Padel and tennis: the differences

The padel racket is short, solid and perforated. The court is small, so you cover less ground, rallies run longer and the walls shape the point. Position and timing decide padel matches, not power.

What do you need to play?

A padel racket, pressurised padel balls and shoes with grip. Most venues rent rackets for a first session, so you can play a few matches before deciding whether to buy your own.

How many players does padel need?

Padel is played by four — two teams of two. Singles courts exist but are rare, which means a match only happens when all four spots are filled.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is padel the same as tennis?
No. The court is smaller, the racket is solid and perforated, and the walls are part of play. The scoring, however, is identical.
How many people play padel?
Standard padel is four players — two teams of two.
Is padel hard to learn?
Most people can rally in their first session; the small court and short racket make the learning curve gentler than tennis.
Do I need to play tennis first?
No. Tennis experience helps with strokes, but the wall game is new to everyone.
How is a padel racket different?
It has a short handle, no strings and holes through the face, so contact and control feel unlike a tennis racket.
Can I go and play padel alone?
A court needs four, so no match forms on your own. Joining an open match or filling someone's missing spot is the practical route.
